Khmer Rouge hearings draw to a close in Phnom Penh

The preliminary hearings in the trial of the four surviving leaders of the
Khmer Rouge movement concluded on Thursday. The elderly defendants have
been charged with an array of crimes, including genocide and war crimes.

Taliban raid on Kabul hotel kills at least 20

A gunfight with security forces raged into the early hours of Wednesday
after militants stormed a hotel in the Afghan capital. Officials said nine
civilians and two police officers were killed, as well as the insurgents.
